In our modern culture, salt has become an afterthought at the dinner table. Sometimes, we are horrified when our redneck cousin asks for a Budweiser, ketchup, and salt at a 5-star steak house. Yet, our bodies physically need salt to live. Jesus tells his followers to live as salt. What does it mean to live as salt? Just a pinch of salt can change the essence of a meal. Try eating french fries with no added salt. We have the power to bring something alive. Salt also has the power to preserve food. For thousands of years, it has been used to cure meats. We have the ability to preserve life. During the time Jesus lived upon earth, Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt – which is where the word ‘salary’ comes from.
In this sermon, we will examine what it means to be salt and light in our modern world.
